A fine imitative portrait of Constantine I
Lot 2947
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.97 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri or Ticinum. Irregular mint, after 320. CONSTANTINVS AV Laureate bust of Constantine I to right, wearing trabea and holding eagle-tipped scepter in his right hand. Rev. CAENSARVM NOSTROR / T✱T around wreath containing VOT / X in two lines. A lovely piece with a fine portrait. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This well struck 'barbarous' imitation is a mule, combining an obverse of Constantine I with a reverse of the caesars. The mint mark is reminiscent of Ticinum but it is also possible that a Trier coin was copied and a fantasy mint mark added.
